Instagram launched a new pop-up alert earlier this year that recommended that users re-consider their post comment if the detection AI of Instagram suspected that such a comment could be perceived as offensive.
Instagram believes this form of prompt has shown positive results, and now, as we move into the holiday break, Instagram is extending the same to post captions, which will now also be scrutinized by the anti-bullying detection AI of Instagram.
As Instagram explains:
“Today, when someone writes a caption for a feed post, and our AI detects the caption as potentially offensive, they will receive a prompt informing them that their caption is similar to those reported for bullying. They will have the opportunity to edit their caption before it’s posted.”

As you can see in the example above, the new process adds an extra stage to the model of detection and warning, with a prompt indicating that previously similar captions been reported
Either way, the system won’t stop users from including their potentially offensive caption, but it’s another step to get users to take a moment to consider the consequences of their actions and what they may post.
Instagram does not specify exactly how its current comment warnings helped but in the most recent Transparency Report from Facebook, it acknowledged that: “Content actioned increased from 2.5 million pieces of content in Q2 2019 to 3.2 million in Q3 2019, as we strengthened our enforcement of our policy on bullying and harassment.”
Facebook does not specifically provide information on Instagram’s bullying and harassment enforcement, but, as Instagram notes, its combined measures, including hiding like counts and adding new elements such as ‘ Restrict ‘, have an impact based on its metrics for such.
Without an insight into just what those metrics are, that we will have to take their word for it, but obviously, user safety and making sure that Instagram is a platform where all users feel free to express themselves is a main focus under new chief Adam Mosseri.
In specific countries, the new caption warning prompts will roll out and expand globally in the near future.
